“It’s good for Oxfam to work with such vibrant and creative people.”
Oxfam Scotland's UK Poverty Programme wanted a film to raise awareness about the challenges faced by asylum-seekers.
WHAT WE DID
Conventional awareness-raising films about asylum-seekers tell stories of persecution. We decided to have a go at redressing the balance and turned the tables, putting the cameras in the hands of asylum-seeking children in a Glasgow primary school. Training them in a participatory filming workshop, we got the asylum-seekers to interview their Scottish peers.
This 90-second 'awareness advert' is distributed by Oxfam, Amnesty International, the Scottish Refugee Council and the Red Cross. It was screened on TV news, on public screens in shopping centres and train stations, and has been used by asylum campaigners across Europe.
